Our story began in 2015 with a life-changing encounter. At the time, I was a Tuk Tuk driver in Colombo, Sri Lanka, renting a three-wheeler from someone else and working hard to make ends meet. One day, Mr. Ian Atkinson, a gentleman from Australia, came to me seeking a fair Tuk Tuk hire. I never interrupted other drivers’ customers, but when he approached me, I understood he was being overcharged. I offered him a fair price and personally took him on his tour.
From that day forward, Mr. Atkinson became more than just a customer. He trusted me to take him wherever he needed to go during his travels in Colombo, and a bond of trust and friendship grew. During one of our conversations, I revealed that I didn’t own the Tuk Tuk I drove—it was a rental, and I struggled to afford the daily rent. That moment marked the beginning of an extraordinary act of kindness.
One day, after completing his usual travel itinerary, we visited a three-wheeler showroom. To my astonishment, Mr. Atkinson told me, “We’re here to buy a Tuk Tuk for you. Pick the one you like.” I couldn’t believe my ears. That day, I left the showroom with my own Tuk Tuk—the very same one that changed my life forever.
Rohan Tharanga
The Founder
Rohan Tharanga is the visionary founder of our Tuk Tuk Tour Company, driven by a passion for sharing Colombo’s culture and beauty with the world. From humble beginnings as a Tuk Tuk driver, Rohan’s journey is one of perseverance, kindness, and gratitude.
But Mr. Atkinson’s generosity didn’t stop there. He also built me a home in Colombo, a place where I now live with immense gratitude. To me, Mr. Atkinson was more than a benefactor; he became like a father. I fondly referred to him as such, and his kindness continues to inspire me every day.
Sadly, on November 26, 2023, Mr. Atkinson passed away. His loss left a void in my life, but his legacy lives on in my heart and in this company.
At his encouragement, I started this Tuk Tuk Tour Company to provide visitors with authentic, fair, and memorable experiences in Colombo. Our mission is to honor his belief in kindness and service by offering the best Tuk Tuk tours, helping travelers explore the beauty and culture of our city.
We proudly launch this website on November 26, 2024, the first anniversary of Mr. Atkinson’s passing, as a tribute to the man who changed my life.
